Setting up your Sonos System

In a typical setup, your Sonos products connect directly to your home’s Wi-Fi network, just like your phone or computer. Place your Sonos products in any room that has a good connection to your home’s Wi-Fi signal, then download the Sonos app to get started. The app will walk you through setting up your Sonos system from beginning to end.

You can also wire a Sonos product directly to your router. This creates a dedicated wireless network just for your Sonos system. This is not typically necessary, but if you have a bigger Sonos system or poor Wi-Fi coverage in your home, it may provide better results. Setting up

Setting up your Sonos system requires the use of a mobile device running iOS or Android, it is not possible to set up a new system with a Mac or PC controller. Make sure you download the latest version of the Sonos app from the app store on your device. Check our system requirements for a full list of devices and features.

  1. Plug in your Sonos products to power.
  2. Download the Sonos app to your phone or tablet that is connected to your home’s Wi-Fi network.
  3. Open the Sonos app, select “Set up a new Sonos system,” then create or sign in to your Sonos account. This option is not available on the Sonos controller for Mac or PC, only on the mobile controllers.
  4. When asked “What are you setting up?”, choose the relevant option and follow the in-app instructions to complete the setup.

Now that your Sonos system is set up, you’ll probably want to add and play some music. Check out the following few articles to get you started. Keep in mind that TuneIn Radio is preinstalled on your Sonos so you can start listening right away, just tap Radio by TuneIn from the Browse tab in the Sonos app.


Remember that in order for your Sonos product and the Sonos app to communicate during the wireless setup process they both need to be within range of your home’s Wi-Fi. If you’re having trouble during the setup process, check to ensure the phone or tablet that is running the Sonos app is connected to your home’s Wi-Fi network.

Certain network types do not support a wireless setup. If you are attempting to set up Sonos on a network that fits one or more of the following criteria, you will need to wire a Sonos product to your router, which will create a dedicated wireless network just for Sonos.

  • Your router must broadcast a 2.4GHz signal for Sonos products to connect to. If you have a dual band router (i.e., 2.4GHz and 5GHz), do not disable the 2.4GHz signal.
  • Wireless-N and Wireless-AC routers should work with Sonos as long as they are still broadcasting over B and G WiFi. Most Wireless-N and AC routers should do this unless manually configured not to.
  • The network must not contain enterprise access points that have been configured to require certificates or other forms of enterprise authentication. If you are using multiple access points, make sure they are all set to the same 2.4GHz wireless channel.
  • Sonos cannot connect to guest networks or networks that use a portal page to login.
  • Networks using wireless range extenders are known to cause issues with Sonos systems that are configured in a wireless setup.
